Carolina Trust Federal Credit Union is a unique full-service, not-for-profit financial cooperative. Simply stated, Carolina Trust returns profits to our member/owners – not stockholders – through competitive loan and savings rates, innovative services, low fees, and personal attention. It’s how credit unions differentiate themselves from other financial institutions that return their profits to stockholders. 

Banks are for-profit financial institutions, and one of their goals is to return profits to their stockholders.  Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives that are member owned and operated.  As such, Carolina Trust returns profits to our member/owners – not stockholders – through competitive loan and savings rates, innovative services, typically lower fees, and personal attention.  When you join Carolina Trust, you are not referred to as a customer but rather our member/owner. 

We are similar to a bank in that we offer many of the same financial products and services you will need throughout your life such as checking, savings options, youth club accounts, vehicle loans, credit cards, home loans, and so much more!  Carolina Trust employees can help you select the best options to meet your individual and family’s financial needs.  We also have free financial education and counseling services available for our members.  

Carolina Trust Federal Credit Union began as Myrtle Beach Air Force Base Federal Credit Union in 1958.  With only one employee in a Base-provided building, the Credit Union was allowed to serve the financial needs of military personnel and civil service employees.  As federal regulations allowed, the Credit Union expanded its field of membership to serve employees of partnering area businesses.  In October 2001, the Credit Union was granted a community charter, which enabled Carolina Trust to serve individuals who live, work, worship, volunteer, or attend school in Horry, Georgetown, Marion, Williamsburg or lower Florence County (south of Lynches River).  Relatives of members and business owners are also eligible to join our Credit Union. Today, Carolina Trust Federal Credit Union serves over 27,000 members worldwide with branch locations in Myrtle Beach, Surfside Beach, Conway, Johnsonville, and Lake City, South Carolina. Our Mission Statement is "Preserving our past, improving our present, building our future: owners serving owners." It serves as a reminder to never forget why credit unions were formed, always look for ways to be more innovative, and celebrate who we are and what we do.

Yes!  The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA), a U.S. Government agency, federally insures all deposits in Carolina Trust.  The National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund insures deposits to at least $250,000 for each account owner listed on an account.  IRA deposits are insured separately up to $250,000 for each account owner listed on an account.  It is one of the strongest federal deposit insurance programs in the United States.

Seven volunteer members make up the Board of Directors for Carolina Trust.  These directors are elected by membership votes at the Carolina Trust Federal Credit Union Annual Membership Meeting, and directors agree to serve two-year terms.  During their terms on the Board, these men and women from various professional backgrounds, including Finance, Marketing, Business, and Military, volunteer their time and skills to oversee how the Credit Union is run.  The Credit Union’s senior management team is responsible for the overall direction, operations, and performance of Carolina Trust.  The Board of Directors also appoints a volunteer Supervisory Committee.  This committee conducts routine audits of Credit Union operations and any existing member account-related concerns.  The Supervisory Committee ensures Credit Union employees follow policies and procedures properly, members receive quality service, and problem resolution occurs in a timely manner.
